Case No. 8, Manny Ramirez From the Page 2 mailbag |
After we opened another case for The Berman Files, Page 2 readers flooded us with more than 2,000 letters suggesting nicknames for Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez.
"A Manny Among Boys" He hits like the bully kid at a sandlot game who's five years older than everyone else. Mark Ramirez Dallas "Man at Work" The guy plays 110 percent day in and day out. He puts up unreal numbers consistently through sheer power, coupled with a graceful swing at the plate. Or you could go with the obvious: "Man-ee hit the hell out of that one." Jason Giebel Minneapolis "So Manny RBI, So Little Time" This guy has averaged more than an RBI a game for the past 2½ seasons. Wow. Daniel Schwent St. Louis "Ram-Bo" Ram for the first three letters of his last name, and Bo for the BoSox. And also because he's powerful. Levi Payton Neosho, Mo. "The Man" "The Man" -- so simple and obvious. You have to take the N.Y. out of his name because we all know what that stands for and it can't stay with a Sox player ... plus Manny is clearly "The Man" to take N.Y. out himself. Will Chandler Stratham, N.H. "One Small Step for Manny" Each hit/HR/RBI is just another small step on his way to the Triple Crown. TJ Buttrick New York "Manwich" Full of beef, and he ain't sloppy, joe. John Glynn Chicago "The Manny, the Myth, the Legend" He's the man, and he hits home runs that resemble myths more than true stories. For example, his bomb in Skydome was the longest in its history. A bomb hit at Fenway took one bounce and was on the Mass Pike. Why the legend? Because he'll become one if he isn't already one. Suchit Patel Westboro, Mass. Manny "Take the Money and Run" Ramirez We already gave him a nickname in Cleveland, Baby Bull, but I'll give him a new one ... how about Manny "Take the Money and Run" Ramirez! Rich Morelli Cleveland Manny "Faces" Ramirez In my childhood, nothing was better than watching a little He-Man after school, and one of the best characters was the good guy/bad guy Man-e-Faces. I would choose this as my nickname for Manny because a player of his caliber can come at you in so many ways. He is a legitimate home run threat, an RBI machine, and the man can hit for average. When you take a run at a prestigious achievement such as the Triple Crown, you are seen in many different lights in the process. Frank Kremer Maryland Heights, Mo. "The Freak" Actually he has a nickname in Boston already: Carl Everett donned him "The Freak." I think that should stick. He is a freak show. John LaPresto Webster, N.Y. "Manny Which Way But Lose" In honor of Clint Eastwood's highly underrated simian cinematic opus. Mark Poutenis New York "The Manchild" I mean c'mon, just look at the guy. He destroys the baseball, but at the same time, he's so timid about it. He hits like a man and is as shy as a child. Nick Gervais Worcester, Mass. "Ribbi" Ramirez RiBbI. 78 reasons so far Paul Flynn Quincy, Mass. "The Latino Bambino" If anybody can help kill the curse it's Manny. Eric Dion Waterbury, Conn. "Show me the Manny" He signed the second largest contract in history. Ben Lauck Baton Rouge, La. "Manny-sthesia" He rocks pitchers to sleep. Justin Low Miami "The Manimal" OK, I know it was a really bad TV show, but there is no way Manny is 100 percent human ... he's an absolute beast! Garrett Wilson Thousand Oaks, Calif. Manny "Happy Returns" He has a rep as the go-to guy, and almost always produces for his team, giving the Red Sox "Happy Returns" on their big investment. David Byrd Austin, Texas "BatMan"ny It's all in his bat! Liz Hardy Frederick, Md. "The Anti-Curse" Manny will turn around the Curse of the Bambino and get the Sox a Series. John Krug Austin, Texas "Manny Mo' Jacks" Red Sox fans can expect many more jacks from Ramirez. Like the Pep Boys-- people love him, especially when he sends towering flies over the Green Monster, Lansdowne Street, the clubs down the block, and the Mass Pike beyond.
