The race for basketball signings is on, as the Nov. 14-21 early signing period has arrived. Rashad Anderson, a Top 100 forward/guard from Lakeland-Kathleen, Fla., has signed with UConn. He had been listed as a soft verbal while considering Florida. Top 100 forward Alexander Johnson of Albany-Dougherty, Ga., signed with Georgia. Alexander, who had earlier given the Bulldogs a soft verbal, was recently being recruited by Cincinnati. Top 100 forward Ike Diogu of Garland, Texas, committed to Arizona State over UConn. Diogu, who averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds as a junior, also considered Illinois, Georgetown and Seton Hall. DeAngelo Alexander, a top 100 guard/forward from Midwest City, Okla., is expected to sign with Oklahoma. Alexander had earlier decommitted from the Sooners. Southern California has a commitment from Top 50 junior college guard Brandon Brooks of Portland, Ore./Indian Hills CC, Iowa. Guard Chauncey Shelton of Detroit-Rogers, Mich., has committed to Toledo. Early Class 2002 Men Rankings: Duke leads the Top 25 Classes.

Mississippi State verballed quarterback Aries Nelson of Cleveland, Miss., over interest from Grambling, Florida, Tennessee and LSU. Arkansas has commitments from linebacker Lucas Jackson of West Monroe, La., over interest from Notre Dame, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, Auburn and Louisiana Tech; Top 100 JC linebacker Marcus Whitemore of Independence CC, Kan., over interest from Oklahoma and South Carolina; and defensive lineman Chase Pressley of Fort Smith-Southside, Ark., over Texas A&M, Purdue, Illinois, Arkansas State and Tulsa. Kansas State pledged tight end Rimmon McNeese of Grandview, Mo. Running back Donnie Johnson of Cincinnati-North College Hill, Ohio, decommitted from Illinois. Early Class 2002 Top 150: Forty-nine prospects have already verballed from the Top 150 List. Early Class 2002 Rankings: Ohio State, Notre Dame and Texas lead the Top 25 Classes.
