Fraser picks Villanova over St. John's, Louisville

Top 100 forward/center Jason Fraser of Amityville, N.Y., has signed with Villanova over St. John's and Louisville.

As a junior, Fraser averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds, eight blocks and six assists in leading Amityville to the New York State Class B championship.

Fraser, who had earlier ruled out North Carolina and UConn, gives new coach Jay Wright a Top 5 recruiting class, joining three other Top 100 prospects in guard Allan Ray of Bronx-St. Raymond's, N.Y., forward Curtis Sumpter of Brooklyn-Bishop Loughlin, N.Y., and guard Randy Foye of Newark-Eastside, N.J.

Duke leads the Early Top 25 Classes as signing figures continue to climb with delayed official announcements. Over 529 men and 469 women finalized choices during the Nov. 14-21 early period. The late period runs April 10-May 15.

New Orleans signed center Ben Elias of Tallahassee-Rickards, Fla.

East Tennessee State signed forward Brad Nuckles of Council, Va., over Charlotte.

Guard DeWitt Maxwell of Newark-Science, N.J., signed with Fairfield. He averaged 17.2 points as a junior.

Touted Class 2003 junior forward Ivan Harris of Springfield-South, Ohio, is headed to Ohio State over interest in Michigan State.

Big Ten:
The Wisconsin Badgers pledged quarterback John Stocco of Richfield-Academy of Holy Angels, Minn., over interest in Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Iowa and Northwestern; and defensive lineman/tight end Mark Gorman of The Woodlands, Texas. The Badgers also received commitments from two Class 2003 juniors in quarterback Tyler Donovan of Hartland-Arrowhead, Wis., and defensive lineman Justin Ostrowski of Portage, Wis.

Tight end/defensive lineman Nick Cavallo of Plainville-Milford Academy, Conn., committed to Purdue.

Penn State has a verbal from defensive back Maurice Humphrey of Berlin, Conn., over Wisconsin and UConn.

Big 12:
Texas A&M has verbals from defensive lineman Dennis Ellis of Cleveland, Texas, and offensive lineman Darrin Johnson of Dallas-North Dallas, Texas, who decommitted from SMU.

Running back Greg Gold of Irving, Texas, pledged to the Oklahoma State Cowboys. He had decommitted from Northwestern.

Baylor has a verbal from receiver Trent Shelton of Crowley-North Crowley, Texas. The Bears recently gained linebacker Nathan Uranga of Burleson, Texas.

Receiver Ross Pilkington of Fort Collins-Loveland, Colo., has reportedly committed to Nebraska. He originally signed with the Huskers in Class 2000, but opted for professional baseball with the Colorado Rockies.

Big East:
Defensive lineman Steve Jewell of Glasgow, Del., committed to Temple over interest from Maryland, Kansas State, Virginia and Rutgers.

ACC:
Defensive lineman Robert Armstrong of Arlington-Washington & Lee, Va., committed to Virginia.

North Carolina State pledged kicker John Derraney of Fayette County, Ga.

Defensive back C.J. Woodard of Henderson-Northern Vance, N.C., committed to Duke. He had earlier pledged to Clemson, but the Tigers wanted him to delay entering school. The Blue Devils recently pledged running back Freddie Bryant of Sewell-Washington Township, N.J., who rushed for 1115 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior.

North Carolina has a verbal from kicker/punter David Woolridge of Davie County, N.C., over interest from North Carolina State, Virginia, East Carolina and Duke.

SEC:
Running back Jimtavis Walker of Statesboro, Ga., has committed to the Florida Gators.

Pac-10:
Southern California has a commitment from linebacker Danny Urquhart of Los Angeles-Washington, Calif./Los Angeles Southwest CC, Calif., who originally signed with Oregon in Class 1999.

Conference USA:
Louisville has a verbal from defensive lineman Ricky Caldwell of Louisville-Waggener, Ky., over Kentucky and Marshall.

WAC:
Offensive lineman Sam Satele of Kailua, Hawaii, and quarterback Jason Whieldon of Orange-Lutheran, Calif./Saddleback CC, Calif., have committed to Hawaii. Satele also drew interest from Nebraska, BYU, Arizona, Utah and Washington.

Mountain West:
BYU gained defensive back Chad Barney of Dixie College, Utah, over interest from Kansas State, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Oregon and Arizona.
