CHICAGO (AP) -- Peter Nowak had Chicago's only goal in regulation, then scored in the shootout to lead the Chicago Fire to a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Mutiny on Friday night.

The loss kept Tampa Bay (13-16) from moving closer to clinching a playoff berth in the MLS East.

Chicago (16-12), winner of four of its last five games, has already clinched a playoff spot and is only four points behind first-place Los Angeles in the West.

Tampa Bay's Carlos Valderrama scored his fourth goal of the season in the 10th minute and Nowak notched his sixth 22 minutes later to tie the game.

The second half was scoreless, setting up the shootout, which the Fire won 4-3.

Nowak, Ante Razov, Josh Wolff and Chris Armas converted their penalty kicks.

A crowd of 15,114 turned out at Soldier Field.
