EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Danish forward Miklos Molnar scored
twice in the first half Wednesday night to give Kansas City a 2-1
victory over New York-New Jersey in Major League Soccer.
Alex Comas' third goal of the season in the 25th minute gave the
MetroStars a 1-0 lead, ending a 234-minute scoreless streak.
Molnar tied it seven minutes later, then gave the Wizards a 2-1
lead two minutes before halftime by converting his league-leading
fifth goal off a pass from Preki.
MetroStars defender Lothar Matthaeus' frustration boiled over in
a bizarre episode that lasted several minutes. The German
international, who has been critical of his new teammates, threw
his captain's armband toward linesman Chip Reed, who promptly threw
it back. The incident was sparked when Wizards defender Peter
Vermes appeared to impede Matthaeus and knocked him to the ground
in the 53rd minute.
The non-call appeared to infuriate Matthaeus, who after
retrieving his armband from the ground, tried to hand it to Reed.
He then continued to walk up the sideline and engaged
German-speaking Kansas City coach Bob Gansler in conversation, all
with the game continuing behind his back in the MetroStars'
defensive end.
Matthaeus continued to press the issue with Reed during a corner
kick in the 57th minute, forcing referee Marcel Yonan to finally
step in and calm Matthaeus.
