KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Tony Meola set a Major League Soccer record with his 12th shutout of the season as the Kansas City Wizards beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 on Saturday night.
Meola made four saves in the Wizards' eighth straight home
shutout, a span of 730 minutes without an opponent scoring a goal
in Arrowhead Stadium.
The victory gave the first-place Wizards (11-2-4) a nine-point
lead over second-place Los Angeles (7-4-7) in the Western Division.
Chris Klein opened the scoring in the 44th minute. Midfielder
Chris Henderson bent a cross into the 6-yard box, and while a
diving Gary Glasgow couldn't reach it, Klein slid in and knocked
the ball inside the right post.
In the 55th minute, Glasgow scored his second goal of the
season. Preki slid a pass inside the box to striker Mo Johnston,
whose hard kick was blocked by Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. But
Hartman couldn't control the rebound and Glasgow tapped the loose
ball into the goal.
Los Angeles has won just once in its last seven games.
