Galaxy 2-0-1 in past three games

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cobi Jones scored in the 62nd minute and cleared a shot from the goal line in the 84th minute as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat D.C. United 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Jones' goal was set up by a long, cross-field pass from midfielder Mauricio Cienfuegos on a 3-on-2 break.

When the defense collapsed around him at the top of the penalty area, Jones dribbled around defender Jeff Agoos, waited for goalkeeper Tom Presthus to commit, then slid a soft shot inside the right post for his team-high fifth goal.

Sebastien Vorbe also scored to help the Galaxy improve to 2-0-1 in their last three games. Los Angeles has defeated D.C. three straight times this season.

Carey Talley scored for Washington, which failed in another attempt at its first back-to-back victories of the season before 17,486 at RFK Stadium.

Talley gave United a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute with his third goal of the year. Agoos bent a free kick into a maze of bodies in the penalty area and Talley toed it off the turf, with the ball taking a high bounce over goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

Los Angeles tied it in the 27th minute when Vorbe took advantage of a poor defensive play by D.C. defender Eddie Pope.

Vorbe scored his first MLS point by beating Pope to a ball in the upper left corner of the penalty area and sending a sweeping left-footed shot inside the right post.

With United pressing on offense in the final minutes, Jones preserved Los Angeles' lead with a great defensive play. Talley knocked a header off the crossbar, but Jones was on the goal line to clear the ball with his head as it glanced off the iron.
