EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- New York-New Jersey and San Jose played a scoreless tie Wednesday night, moving the MetroStars into a first-place tie in Major League Soccer's Eastern Division.
The Metro Stars (8-7-2) tied idle New England (7-6-5) with 26
points. San Jose, 0-7-4 on the road this year, is last in the
Western Division at 4-7-7.
New York-New Jersey's best chance came in the 13th minute when
Tab Ramos rocketed a shot from outside the box that San Jose
goalkeeper Joe Cannon knocked aside. Cannon then stopped Steve
Shak's header off the rebound.
San Jose's best opportunity came in the 22nd minute when Dan
Calichman's shot bounced off the bar.
Neither team had a serious scoring chance in the 10-minute
overtime. Howard finished with four saves in his first start of the
season for the MetroStars. Cannon had nine saves for San Jose.
