EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Clint Mathis had a goal and an assist to lead the New York-New Jersey MetroStars past the Dallas Burn 3-2 Saturday.
The MetroStars (2-1-1) had only five shots on goal in the first
half but still managed to score twice.
Petter Villegas took a diagonal pass from Mathis in the 22nd
minute, eluded charging Burn goalie Matt Jordan, and shot the ball
in. Mark Chung made it 2-0 15 minutes later when his left-footed
shot went between Jordan and the near post from 12 yards out.
Mathis, who missed last week's loss to Tampa Bay because he was
with the U.S. national team, scored in the 60th minute with a solo
run. He dribbled around two defenders and drilled a low 15-yard
shot past Jordan.
Richard Farrer knocked in a rebound off the left post in the
71st for Dallas (2-2), and Jorge Rodriguez added a penalty kick
after MetroStars defender was whistled for a hand ball.
