PASADENA, Calif. (AP) Danny Califf scored in the second sudden-death period to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 victory over the defending MLS champion Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night in front of 13,471 at the Rose Bowl.
On a free-kick from the right side, Simon Elliott sent a cross to a streaking Califf, who one-touched the ball with his left foot from close range, easily beating Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola for the game-winner in the 96th minute.
Los Angeles (3-2-0) won its third straight game and snapped a two-game losing streak against the Wizards (3-3-1).
The opening score drew the Galaxy bench to its feet in protest. Television replays showed Wizard midfielder Chris Brown losing his footing with Galaxy defender Ezra Hendrickson giving chase, but referee Kevin Terry whistled Hendrickson for a tripping penalty and awarded Kansas City a penalty kick.
Midfielder Matt McKeon converted the penalty, beating Galaxy
goalkeeper Matt Reis to the near post in the 18th minute for a 1-0
lead. It was McKeon's fourth goal of the season.
