WASHINGTON (AP) -- Abdul Thompson Conteh tied a team record with four goals and D.C. United beat the winless New England Revolution 5-0 Wednesday night.
Carey Talley also scored for D.C., and Bobby Convey matched a
team record with three assists as the United won their second
straight game. Goalkeeper Mike Ammann made four saves in his first
shutout of the season.
New England's 0-6-0 start is the worst in the six-year history of the MLS.
D.C. turned in its best offensive performance of the season
after surrendering three goals in the final 11 minutes of their
last game, a 3-2 road loss to New York/New Jersey on May 5.
Conteh has six goals this season -- all against the Revolution. He tied the team record for most goals in a game, accomplished twice by Raul Diaz Arce.
Sixteen-year-old Santino Quaranta became the youngest player
ever to appear in an MLS game when he entered as a United
substitute in the 74th minute.
In the 5th minute, Conteh headed in Mark Lisi's cross at the
right post for a 1-0 lead.
Conteh, unguarded, easily tapped in Eddie Pope's pass in the
34th minute and Talley headed in a curling feed from Marco
Etcheverry in the 40th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Conteh completed his first MLS hat trick in the 41st minute.
When Revolution goalkeeper Juergen Sommer and defender Nick Dowling
collided at the top of the penalty area, the ball bounced past
them, giving Conteh an open net.
A similar miscommunication led to Conteh's fifth goal early in
the second half. Sommer ran into Rusty Pierce while trying to
corral a loose ball and it careened behind the pair to an unmarked
Conteh.
D.C. United signed A.J. Wood on Wednesday. Wood was traded from
D.C. to Kansas City on Feb. 5 for a third-round draft pick and was
waived by the Wizards on March 26.
