DENVER (AP) _ Colorado forward John Spencer scored on a pair of
penalty kicks to give the Rapids a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay
Mutiny on Saturday.
Both of Spencer's goals were the result of fouls committed by
Tampa Bay midfielder Joseph Addo inside the penalty area.
Tampa Bay's only goal also came on a penalty kick. Forward
Mamadou Diallo was pulled down in the penalty area by Colorado
defender Chris Martinez, and he blasted the ball into the
upper-left corner past Rapids goalkeeper Adin Brown.
Spencer's first goal came in the 69th minute, after he was
knocked down by Addo inside the penalty area. He scored his second
goal in the 79th minute, when referee Richard Heron ruled that Addo
touched the ball with his hand inside the penalty area.
Colorado (2-3-1) won its second consecutive game and Tampa Bay
dropped to 2-4-1.
The three penalty kicks taken tied a MLS single-game record. It
had occurred only three times before.
