COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Jeff Cunningham scored with one minute
left in overtime to give the Columbus Crew a 2-1 victory over D.C.
United on Saturday night.
Columbus was down two players for the final 32 minutes because
of ejections, but still delivered interim coach Greg Andrulis a
victory in his debut.
Cunningham, a late substitution, one-timed John Harkes' corner
kick past United goalkeeper Mike Anmann to snap Columbus' four-game
winless streak.
Brian McBride's header in the 25th minute gave Columbus the
early lead. McBride's goal was the Crew's first home goal of the
season.
Santino Quaranta, D.C.'s 16-year-old rookie, scored his first
career goal in the 69th minute to tie the game at 1.
The United was unable to capitalize on their two-man advantage
or beat Columbus goalkeeper Tom Presthus, who was acquired by the
Crew from United in an offseason trade.
Jaime Moreno hit the crossbar in the 34th minute and Craig
Ziadie hit the right post in the second minute of overtime.
Presthus stopped two shots from close range by Mark Lisi and
another by Ziadie in the second half. He also got a hand on Abdul
Thompson Conteh's spin-around shot in the 89th minute, redirecting
it just wide of the post.
The win was the first at home for the Crew, who fired coach Tom
Fitzgerald last Wednesday after a 1-3-2 start.
The Crew entered the game against D.C. with the fewest points in
the MLS (5) and a league-low four goals.
