FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) _ Cate scored on a penalty kick in the final
minute to lift the New England Revolution into a 1-1 draw with the
New York/New Jersey MetroStars on Sunday.
The MetroStars (6-3-2) appeared to be heading for a victory on
the 25th-minute strike by Rodrigo Faria, but New England forward
Johnny Torres was taken down in the box by Richie Williams to set
up the penalty kick.
Cate beat goalkeeper Tim Howard with a high shot to the center
of the net. It was Cate's fourth goal of the year and third from
the penalty spot.
Faria's goal, his second, came after Clint Mathis took a pass
from Mark Chung and found Faria unmarked in the middle of the New
England area. Faria's strike from 15 yards beat Revolution
goalkeeper Juergen Sommer to the right side.
New England (3-8-1) nearly scored the game-winner in the fourth
minute of overtime after Torres put Cate through on the right side,
but Howard extended for the save. On the ensuing corner kick,
Howard deflected a shot by Torres from 10 yards.
