KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Jamar Beasley converted in the match's opening minute and Peter Nowak and Hristo Stoitchkov each scored twice as the Chicago Fire beat the Kansas City Wizards 7-0 Wednesday night, coming within one goal of the MLS record for most in a game.
Sergi Daniv and Eric Wynalda also scored in the first half for
the Fire (8-3-3), who scored the most goals in an MLS game this
season. Two teams had scored six this season.
The MLS record for goals in a game was set by the Los Angeles
Galaxy in an 8-1 victory over the Dallas Burn on June 4, 1998.
Beasley got free off a misplayed header by the Wizards and shot
across the right side of the box past Kansas City goalkeeper Bo
Oshoniyi 45 seconds into the game for his third goal of the year.
In the seventh minute, Daniv made it 2-0 with an uncontested
shot on the right side. Wynalda made it 3-0 with a goal with one
minute left in the first half.
In the second half, Nowak scored his third and fourth goals of
the year off counterattacks.
With the Wizards (6-9-1) still pushing the ball up, Stoitchkov
got two breakaways and converted both in the 83rd and 88th minute.
