SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Jeff Agoos left early, and Landon Donovan didn't play until late. Still, the San Jose Earthquakes nearly got the best of MLS' best team.

Ramiro Corrales scored his first goal of the season as the Earthquakes played to a 1-1 tie with the Miami Fusion on Wednesday.

In a matchup of MLS' surprising top two squads, San Jose and Miami both extended their unbeaten streaks to 12 matches. Still, the Earthquakes felt their effort cemented their impressive turnaround this season.

"It's disappointing, but that's because we can do better," said Donovan, who had an immediate impact as a second-half substitute. "In the second half and especially overtime, we were all over them. We were incredibly unlucky not to score. We let them know that we're for real."

The Earthquakes lost Agoos, their captain and a starting defender for the U.S. National Team, to a bruised lower back late in the first half. Agoos fell hard when he was undercut by MLS scoring leader Diego Serna, who was booed whenever he touched the ball by the crowd of 9,847 at Spartan Stadium.

Donovan returned last week from a stay with the U.S. under-20 team, but he didn't start because of an illness that limited his training this week. When he entered the game, Donovan initiated several scoring chances for himself and his teammates, but the Earthquakes couldn't get a goal.

"That was one of the better games I've seen us play, and it was just a good end-to-end soccer game," Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said. "I felt like we had more chances, but they were always dangerous."

The Fusion haven't lost since April 18, while the Earthquakes -- who equaled last season's entire point total with the tie -- haven't been beaten since a 2-1 loss at Miami on April 21.

Preki scored in the first half for the Fusion, who were outrun and outworked for much of the match but hung on for their first point in four trips to San Jose.

Even with Agoos out, the Earthquakes' defense was strong against the Fusion's attack. On the other end, San Jose missed several tantalizing scoring chances in the first half, including a deflected shot by Dwayne DeRosario that hit the left post.

Miami got its goal at 20:32 on a long run by Preki, who passed to Tyrone Marshall and then got the ball back at the penalty spot for an easy shot that beat Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon, whose shutout streak ended at 232 minutes.

It was Preki's fifth goal of the season, and San Jose trailed for just the fifth time all season.

"It was nice for us to be down and come back," said San Jose forward Manny Lagos, who was denied goals by Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando. "That will probably help us down the road. Still, I think a just result would have been a win."

San Jose answered in the 56th minute when Wade Barrett's shot was deflected to Corrales, who was starting his first MLS match. He fired a hard shot off Rimando from the top of the penalty box, and defender Carlos Llamosa couldn't stop the bouncing ball from crossing the line.

Rimando did most of the work, making eight saves, including several spectacular stops.

"Nick has been doing it all year," Miami coach Ray Hudson said. "He never ceases to amaze us. He's very special, and his reflexes are magnificent."
