Johnson jolts Revs in his debut

DALLAS (AP) -- Dallas Burn rookie Edward Johnson spoiled what had been a stellar MLS debut by New England Revolution goalie Jose Fernandez with a goal in the last 30 seconds of regulation to help force a 1-1 tie.

Wednesday's goal by the 17-year-old was his first career goal in MLS play.

Dallas' Paul Broome crossed the ball to Ariel Graziani who fed Johnson for the goal, the team's first in more than 225 minutes.

"I think Eddie provided a good spark, he was clearly active," Burn coach Mike Jeffries said "We'll have to caution him not to read the press clippings like everyone else on this team seems to do."

"All we had been able to come away with down there was missed chances," Jeffries said.

New England signed Fernandez last month to replace starting goalkeeper Juergen Sommer, who suffered a season-ending injury. Fernandez finished the game with nine saves.

New England (4-7-4) scored in the 29th minute when Cate scored on a free kick from the left side. His shot over the wall of Burn defenders went just inside the right upright, past the outstretched hands of Burn goalie Matt Jordan.

Dallas (6-6-3) had a goal called back in the 44th minute when Graziani was ruled offside on the play.

The Burn almost tied the game in the 82nd minute when Jason Kreis' shot bounced off the right post.

Fernandez, who played the entire game despite getting kicked in the shin in the 18th minute, almost gave up a goal to the Burn's Chad Deering in the 37th minute. Deering fired a point-bank shot that Fernandez almost let get through his hands, but Fernandez was able to turn around and pick up the ball just inches before it crossed the goal line.
