MIAMI (AP) -- Adolfo Valencia scored twice as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars beat Miami 3-0 Saturday night, snapping the Fusion's 12-match unbeaten streak.
MetroStars goalkeeper Tim Howard had seven saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
The Fusion entered Saturday's match with a league-best 11-1/3 record and 36 points.
Petter Villegas scored in the 57th minute for the MetroStars
(8-6-3). Valencia sent a pass from inside the midfield stripe to
Villegas, who dribbled, unmarked, inside the Miami penalty box and
beat Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando from 18 yards.
Valencia scored in the 66th minute, off a free kick from Daniel
Hernandez, and added his second goal in the 73rd minute.
Valencia took a deep pass from Mark Chung, ran past the Miami
backline into the goal area and beat Rimando from 20 yards for his
second goal of the game.
Howard thwarted two Fusion scoring chances in the final 11
minutes of the first half.
In the 34th minute, Howard deflected a header by Diego Serna
inside the 6-yard box with his foot, and stopped a 12-yard header
by Alex Pineda Chacon with one minute left in the first half.
