COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Dante Washington converted Jeff Cunningham's centering pass in the 83rd minute Wednesday night to give the Columbus Crew a 2-1 MLS victory over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.
Washington, who entered the game two minutes earlier after the teams traded own goals, scored his team-leading sixth goal while falling backward.
In the 62nd minute, Mark Chung of the MetroStars (8-7-3)
attempted to head Duncan Oughton's hard shot back to goalkeeper Tim
Howard. But Chung inadvertently redirected the ball into his own
goal to give the Crew (6-5-5) a 1-0 lead.
Columbus' Mike Lapper made a similar miscue that tied the game
1-1 in the 81st minute. He headed a shot by Adolfo Valencia of the
MetroStars over Crew goalkeeper Tom Presthus.
In the 43rd minute, the MetroStars thought they scored on
another own goal when a shot by Daniel Hernandez deflected off
Oughton and into the net. But the play was ruled offside.
Columbus is 3-0-3 at home since Greg Andrulis replaced Tom Fitzgerald as coach on May 17. The MetroStars entered the game with two consecutive road victories after going winless in their first seven road games.
