SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Jeff Cunningham and Robert
Warzycha scored unassisted goals as the Columbus Crew overcame a
pair of deficits and rallied for a 2-2 deadlock with the San
Jose Earthquakes.
Ronald Cerritos tallied twice for San Jose, which had its lead
atop the Western Division trimmed to four points over Los
Angeles.
The first half resembled a track meet, with the speedy squads
racing from end to end in the tight confines of Spartan Stadium.
Cerritos volleyed home a shot in the 15th minute to put the
Earthquakes up, 1-0. Manny Lagos chipped the ball ahead to the
waiting Cerritos 30 yards from goal. He chested it down to his
feet, then struck a shot that knuckled over goalkeeper Tom
Presthus.
San Jose did not have much time to celebrate, however, as the
Crew fought back for the equalizer. John Harkes sent the ball
ahead to Brian McBride, who struck a challenging shot on net.
Joe Cannon managed to get airborne, clearing the ball off the
line with an impressive diving stop. But the ball fell to
Cunningham, who split a pair of defenders and put a shot in the
back of the net.
San Jose continued to apply offensive pressure as All-Star
Landon Donovan began to probe seams in the defense. In the 38th
minute, he let loose a powerful point-blank shot that cleanly
beat Presthus but struck the crossbar.
A minute later, the Earthquakes broke the tie, again courtesy of
Cerritos. Warzycha lost control of the ball and was unable to
recover before Lagos mounted a counterattack. Lagos pressed
forward to Junior Agogo, who found Cerritos at the edge of the
penalty area. Cerritos dribbled into the box before slipping
the ball under Presthus.
Early in the second half, the Crew equalized with a spectacular
free kick by Warzycha. "The Polish Rifle" teed off from just
outside the penalty area, deflecting the curling ball off Ian
Russell in the San Jose defensive wall. The shot forced a quick
reaction from Cannon, who managed to get his hand on it before
it struck the bottom of the crossbar.
