TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Goalkeepers Jose Fernandez of New England and
Adin Brown of Tampa Bay stood out as the Revolution and Mutiny
battled to a scoreless double-overtime tie Sunday night.
Fernandez escaped trouble of his own doing in the 21st minute.
After tripping Mamadou Diallo as he broke free on the left side,
Fernandez made a diving stop of his penalty kick.
Fernandez flattened Diallo on another breakaway in the 53rd
minute. The second-year forward, who has recorded a goal or assist
against every MLS team except New England, became angered when he
wasn't awarded a second penalty kick.
Diallo nearly won the match in the first overtime with a blast
just wide of the left post.
Revolution forwards Wolde Harris and Marco Cate hit the right
post with shots in the second half.
In between, Mutiny forward Eric Quill and Revolution midfielder
Joe Franchino got red cards for fighting after a diving save
by Fernandez.
The Revolution (7-12-6) closed to four points of Dallas for
the final playoff berth.
Tampa Bay (4-18-2) became the first team eliminated from
postseason contention.
