| HAMBURG, Germany -- Lothar Matthaeus is interested in
becoming the coach of the New York-New Jersey MetroStars if Bora
Milutinovic quits or is fired from the last-place team.
"It could be that Bora gives up -- then I could take over," the
38-year-old defender said in an interview with the weekly magazine
Sport Bild, which was released Tuesday.
Matthaeus, voted Germany's player of the year last season with
Bayern Munich, will join the MetroStars after the German
Bundesliga's midseason break.
The MetroStars have lost a Major League Soccer-record 12
consecutive games and are 5-22-3 this season.
Matthaeus is said to be trying to convince former Italian stars
Guiseppe Bergomi and Roberto Donadoni to help him turn around the
MetroStars. Both are 35.
"We need to put together a good team, one with the right mix of
veterans and hungry players," Matthaeus said.
Bergomi retired last season at Internazionale of Milan after
playing three World Cups for Italy. Donadoni played for the
MetroStars in 1996-97 before rejoining AC Milan.
