| DENVER -- The Colorado Rapids on Monday acquired Colombian
National Team forward Henry Zambrano from the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in exchange for an allocation.
Zambrano was to join the Rapids immediately at their spring training camp in Boca Raton, Fla.
Zambrano, 26, joined the MetroStars in July after starring in
his native Colombia and in Ecuador. He scored three goals for the
struggling MetroStars, including the game-winner in a victory over
Columbus on Sept. 12, snapping his team's 12-game losing streak.
"We are thrilled to have a player of Henry's caliber joining
us," Rapids coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick said. "He is a proven
goal scorer who is quick and crafty and will be a perfect
complement to Jorge Dely Valdes and Paul Bravo.
"We wanted to drastically improve at the goalkeeper and
goal-scoring positions, and the addition of an offensive threat
like Henry finalizes what has been a very good couple of weeks for
us in that regard."
The Rapids acquired the allocation, along with defender Scott
Vermillion, from the Kansas City Wizards two weeks ago in exchange
for Peter Vermes and Matt McKeon. An allocation gives a team the
acquisition money to acquire a foreign player.
