BOX SCORE
ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- A little rest can be a dangerous thing. But not too dangerous against the Indiana Fever. The Orlando Miracle, playing their first game in five days, fell behind early before holding the expansion Fever without a basket over the final eight minutes of the first half on the way to their fourth straight victory, 72-60. Adrienne Johnson scored eight of her 15 points in a 13-3 run to end the first half. Taj McWilliams had eight points and Shannon Johnson seven in a 17-6 surge opening the second half as the Miracle broke to a 47-30 lead with 13:40 left. "I think AJ plays with a lot of confidence," Orlando coach Carolyn Peck said. "She is a true example of how hard work pays off. She has the confidence that she can hit the big shots. She's worked hard, and she deserves to take those shots." Orlando never let the lead drop below double digits the rest of the way. McWilliams tied her season high with 22 points for Orlando, which scored 20 points off 19 Indiana turnovers while allowing just six points off its own giveaways. Orlando outscored Indiana 19-0 on the fast break. "They are a focused team, they knew that we were competitive because of our success last time we were here and they came out with a game plan and they stuck to it," Indiana coach Anne Donovan said. The Fever, who lost their ninth straight game dating to a 79-54 rout of the Miracle on June 17, got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Kara Wolters, 13 points from Stephanie McCarty and 10 apiece from Monica Maxwell and Rita Williams. The Fever scored the game's first six points for their biggest lead and were up 21-17 when Alicia Thompson hit a 12-foot jumper with 8:02 left in the first half. That was Indiana's last basket of the first half and Orlando took a 30-24 lead into the locker room. McWilliams' layup with 12:40 to go capped the Miracle's run that opened the second half, giving them a 47-30 lead. "We had problems with them the last time at home," McWilliams said. "We let them beat us by 25 points. Coach came in and wrote on the board, `79-54. I remind you.' That was the final score of the last game. Today we came in focused. There's no way any team should be able to come in here and beat us by 25 points." The Miracle built their lead to 19 points twice, the last time on Carla McGhee's three-foot hook that made it 60-41 with 5:38 left. "We stopped attacking the basket until the very end when we started a comeback too late," Wolters said. "It's a consistency thing." The Eastern Conference-leading Miracle improved to 7-3 at home after going 8-8 in the TD Waterhouse Centre last season. The Fever matched the second-longest slide in league history. Sacramento lost nine in a row in 1997 and Washington holds the record with an 11-game skid two seasons ago.
