MIAMI (AP) -- Sheri Sam scored 23 points and Marlies Askamp added 17 as the Miami Sol set a franchise points record Friday with a 76-65 victory over the Utah Starzz. Sam's layup with 7.2 seconds left gave the Sol a 76-63 lead, matching Miami's biggest lead of the game. Twice previously, the Sol scored 74 points. The Sol also had their best shooting percentage output this season, connecting on 47.4 percent from the field. Miami (9-14) entered the game shooting just 36.4 percent from the field, last in the WNBA. "The numbers show how hard the team played," said Sam, who nearly doubled her season scoring average of 11.8 points per game. "This team doesn't quit." Reserve forward Kristen Rasmussen added 10 points for Miami. Utah, led by Natalie Williams' 18 points, led early. But Askamp, a 6-foot-5 center, sank a 3-pointer to give Miami an 18-16 lead at 11:55 of the first half. The Sol never trailed again. Askamp, who was in a scoring slump, scored 13 points in the first half. Scoreless in the Sol's last game, Askamp combined for just 13 points in her previous three games. The Sol led by as much as seven points in the first half and went into halftime ahead 33-30. Utah (12-12) pulled within 33-32 on a pair of free throws by Korie Hlede, who had 15 points. But Miami went on a 15-3 run over the next seven minutes and pulled comfortably ahead, 48-35 on Askamp's layup.
