SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sheri Sam scored 21 points as the
surprising Miami Sol remained unbeaten by defeating the Sacramento
Monarchs 71-67 Saturday night.

The Sol squandered an 11-point lead in the second half, but
managed to hold off Sacramento for its fourth consecutive victory to
open the season.
Trailing by nine points, the Monarchs rallied behind the
shooting of Edna Campbell, who made two 3-pointers and a short
baseline jumper, cutting Miami's lead to 64-63 with 1:26 remaining.
But Sam made a 3-pointer, and the Sol added four free throws in
the final 24 seconds to defeat the Monarchs.
Sandy Brondello scored 16 points for Miami, which led 36-34 and
built a 54-43 margin with 11:33 remaining. Elena Baranova had 12
points, seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks.
Kedra Holland-Corn made four 3-pointers and had 16 points for
Sacramento. Campbell had 15 points, Yolanda Griffith had 14 points
and nine rebounds, while Tangela Smith added 14 points. Both Sam
and Baranova scored 10 points in the first half, helping the Sol to
a 36-34 lead.
Monarchs All-Star guard Ticha Penicheiro missed her fourth
