McHugh suffers first loss as Monarchs coach |

MIAMI (AP) -- Elena Baranova scored 21 points as the Miami Sol beat Sacramento 66-54 Saturday night, snapping the Monarchs' five-game winning streak.
The Sol (7-9), who had lost nine of their last 12 games, shot a franchise-best 54 percent and faced a nine-point deficit twice in the first half.
Baranova shot 8-for-14, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range,
and finished with seven rebounds. Sheri Sam added 12 points for the
Sol, who scored 27 points off 18 Sacramento turnovers.
Miami outscored Sacramento 34-26 in the second half and led by
as many as 17 points in the final minutes.
Yolanda Griffith scored 20 points for the Monarchs (10-7), who
had a season-low point total and lost for the first time in five
games under coach Maura McHugh, who took over as coach on June 25,
when Sonny Allen resigned.
Faced with an eight-point deficit, the Sol scored 14 straight
points and built a 32-28 lead by the intermission. Baranova scored
12 points in the first half and Miami shot 59 percent in the first
20 minutes.
The Monarchs played nearly the entire second half without point
guard Ticha Penicheiro, who cut the bridge of her nose and required
three stitches.
Miami's Marlies Askamp, who started the first 11 games, sprained
her right ankle in the first half and did not return.
