NEW YORK -- Sheryl Swoopes of the Houston Comets finished as the leading vote-getter in balloting for the WNBA All-Star game.

Swoopes received 171,576 votes for the game, to be played in Phoenix on Monday. More than 2.4 million votes were cast in Internet balloting and in arenas, almost double the 1.25 million cast last year.

Swoopes will be joined on the Western Conference starting lineup by teammates Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson, along with Lisa Leslie of Los Angeles and Ticha Penicheiro of Sacramento.

The Eastern starters are Chamique Holdsclaw and Nikki McCray of Washington; Sue Wicks and Teresa Weatherspoon of New York and Taj McWilliams of Orlando.

Reigning MVP Yolanda Griffith and seven first-time picks were among 12 reserves announced Wednesday.

The East reserves, picked by league coaches, included first-timers Wendy Palmer of Detroit, Tari Phillips of New York and Andrea Stinson of Charlotte. They join Nykesha Sales and Shannon Johnson of Orlando and Merlakia Jones of Cleveland as backups.

The West newcomers are Katie Smith and Betty Lennox of Minnesota and DeLisha Milton and Mwadi Mabika of Los Angeles. The other Western backups are Natalie Williams of Utah and Griffith, last season's Most Valuable Player, of Sacramento.

New York's Richie Adubato will coach the East, and Houston's Van Chancellor the West.
