TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Angels should not be concerned with Tom Candiotti's bad outing. Help is on the way.

Knuckleballer Candiotti allowed three homers and seven runs in four-plus innings of a 9-4 Cactus League loss to a split squad of Oakland Athletics. After the game, the Angels dealt impending free agent outfielder Jim Edmonds to the St. Louis Cardinals for righthander Kent Bottenfield and second baseman prospect Adam Kennedy.

Candiotti (0-2) was not sharp, surrendering a two-run homer to John Jaha in a four-run third, a solo shot to Jorge Velandia in the fourth and a two-run blast to Jason Giambi in the fifth.

Bottenfield entered the 1999 season with 18 career wins and matched that total as he led the Cardinals in victories.

Jaha and Velandia have four spring homers. Giambi had three hits and three RBI.

The winner was starter Ron Mahay (2-0), a former replacement player who allowed one run and three hits in four innings.

Darin Erstad homered and Mike Stoner stroked a pinch two-run triple for the Angels.
