GAME LOG
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Cal Ripken moved within three hits of 3,000, but the Minnesota Twins rallied for six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Baltimore Orioles 10-9 Friday night. Ripken went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and Mike Bordick, Jeff Conine and Delino DeShields homered off Eric Milton. Minnesota, however, snapped a five-game losing streak and an eight-game skid to the Orioles dating to last year when they rallied from a 9-4 deficit in the eighth. Baltimore lost its fourth in a row. After the Twins loaded the bases off Chuck McElroy, Al Reyes gave up a pair of two-run doubles, to Matthew LeCroy and Torii Hunter, as Minnesota pulled to 9-8. Buddy Groom (0-1) replaced him and gave up an RBI single to Cristian Guzman that tied it. Then, Matt Lawton's sacrifice fly to left scored pinch-runner Jason Maxwell for a 10-9 lead. Mark Redman (1-0) got the final out in the eighth -- on one pitch -- for the victory. Eddie Guardado pitched the ninth for his first save. Albert Belle opened with a walk but was picked off for the second out, and Ripken grounded out to end it. Ripken's single in the second inning gave him 2,997 career hits in his quest to become the 24th player to collect 3,000. The sparse crowd of 15,249 at the Metrodome booed when Ripken fouled out to first base in the fourth inning and again in the fifth, when Ripken was robbed by left fielder Jacque Jones' leaping catch at the wall. B.J. Surhoff went 4-for-4 and scored on Ripken's line-drive sacrifice fly to center field off Bob Wells in the seventh that made it 9-4. Jose Mercedes gave up four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. He allowed a sacrifice fly to LeCroy in the second, a two-run triple to Hunter in the fourth and an RBI single to David Ortiz in the sixth. Milton, who took a perfect game into the seventh inning at Kansas City on Saturday, struggled through five innings, surrendering six earned runs on nine hits. He had never given up more than two homers in a game. Milton gave up a three-run homer to Bordick, his fourth, in the second inning. Conine's solo shot, his first of the year, made it 4-1 in the fourth, and DeShields' first homer of the season made it 5-3 in the fifth. Harold Baines added an RBI single before Ripken lined out to left for the third out. In the sixth, LaTroy Hawkins gave up a single to Conine and a double to Charles Johnson. A wild pitch scored one run and Rich Amaral's single scored another to make it 8-3. Game notesBaltimore came into the Metrodome after losing three in a row at Kansas City. In those games, the Orioles gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, the 12th and the ninth. ... Bordick has hit in all 10 of the Orioles' games. ... With one out in the third, Belle hit a bloop to center field, but Hunter threw out Surhoff at second, leaving Belle with a fielder's choice instead of a single. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Baltimore Clubhouse Minnesota Clubhouse RECAPS Texas 7 Cleveland 2
