Schoeneweis early stopper for Angels

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Scott Schoeneweis is a perfect starter.

"I'm just trying to keep everything in perspective," the Anaheim left-hander said Sunday after beating the Chicago White Sox 3-1 with eight innings of three-hit ball.

"The more innings I'm out there, the more confident I am. In between, I'm trying to stay on an even keel. This one's over and I got to pitch against Tampa Bay next. That's what I'm looking to."

Schoeneweis (3-0), who made 31 relief appearances as a rookie last season, has beaten the Yankees, Blue Jays and White Sox this season in his first three major league starts.

On Sunday, he surrendered a bloop single to Frank Thomas and doubles to Ray Durham and Carlos Lee. Troy Percival pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.

"We had some young arms in spring training and we expected someone to step up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Scott was in that group, so I'm not surprised.

"He had a great feel today of when to throw certain pitches."

Anaheim went ahead with two runs in the fourth off Jim Parque (1-1), who dropped to 0-4 against the Angels.

Troy Glaus walked and scored on and RBI double by Scott Spiezio, who then raced to third on Edgard Clemente's infield single. Ben Molina followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Glaus doubled, Spiezio hit a hard-shot single past third and Clemente delivered an RBI grounder for a 3-1 lead in the sixth.

Three of the Angels' 13 hits came on hard grounders that got past third baseman Paul Konerko or shortstop Craig Wilson.

"Our defense was exposed a bit as far as range," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said.

"I can't worry about that," said Parque. "I've just got to battle with the hitters."

Durham hit a two-out, RBI double in the third for Chicago's first hit off Schoeneweis. It scored Wilson, who walked and moved up on an infield out. Durham was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

The run snapped an 11-inning scoreless streak for Schoeneweis, who'd shut out the Blue Jays on three hits in his previous outing. On Sunday, he walked two and struck out two, throwing 61 strikes among his 94 pitches.

Parque gave up three runs and 10 hits in six innings. He has lost 10 of 11 decisions, dating to last season.

Game notes
Angels OF Garret Anderson didn't start because of a sore left ankle. He was hurt in the first inning Saturday coming out of the batter's box after an RBI single. Darin Erstad, who replaced Anderson in center, made a great diving catch to rob Paul Konerko of a hit in the seventh. "You're not going to find a better catch than the one he made," Scioscia said. ... Parque and Glaus were college teammates at UCLA. Glaus went 1-for-2 against the left-hander Sunday and is 3-for-8 in his career against Parque. ... Attendance was just 10,929 on a 49-degree day. ... Schoeneweis had a ligament replaced in his pitching elbow following his sophomore season at Duke. ... Clemente's single in the fourth was his first hit in the AL.
