Huskey's ninth-inning single lifts Twins

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Butch Huskey made the Kansas City Royals pay for their decision to intentionally walk Corey Koskie.

After the Royals walked Koskie in the ninth inning, Huskey hit a two-out single to give the Minnesota Twins a 7-6 victory over Kansas City on Wednesday night.

"There's no reason to wake a dog when he's sleeping, and that's what happened," said Huskey, who was hitless in his first four at-bats. "Any hit I can get now feels good, because it seems like I've been just missing it the last few times up."

Jose Santiago (2-1) took the loss for the Royals, who have lost five straight. Hector Carrasco (2-1) was the winner.

With one out in the ninth, Matt Lawton hit a double that barely cleared the infield. Royals second baseman Carlos Febles charged in to field Lawton's high chopper, but the ball bounced over his head, allowing Lawton to reach second.

"He tried to make a great play out of a play that probably couldn't be made," Royals manager Tony Muser said. "I don't look at it as a mistake, I look at it as baseball."

Huskey took two strikes before hitting Santiago's slider up the middle.

"He's a veteran guy, and he did his job," Muser said of Huskey.

Minnesota scored three runs in the seventh to tie it at 6.

Rookie Mark Quinn had the third two-homer game of his brief major league career and sparked a three-run burst in the seventh that gave Kansas City a 6-3 lead.

The Royals chased Minnesota starter Eric Milton in the seventh. Milton has surrendered six home runs in his past two starts.

Quinn's homers were his first of the season. The left fielder had a pair of two-homer games after being called up from Triple-A Omaha for a 17-game stint last September.

Jermaine Dye homered and drove in two runs for the Royals.

Royals starter Mac Suzuki got into trouble early, allowing a walk, a double and another walk to start the game. The Twins scored twice, but Suzuki escaped further trouble by striking out Huskey.

Dye led off the second with his fifth home run of the season. Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on Quinn's two-run homer.

Minnesota's Marcus Jensen hit his first AL home run in the fourth. He also tripled and singled.

Game notes
RHP Jay Witasick was scratched from his probable start on Wednesday night because of soreness in his right biceps. He is expected back in the rotation for the Royals' game Saturday in Seattle ... Before the game, the Twins honored the University of Minnesota women's hockey team, which beat Brown to win the national championship last month ... Despite struggling to hit home runs this season, the Twins lead the majors with eight triples.
