SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Bret Boone promised to get back at Pat Mahomes, and he lived up to his word. Boone homered twice, including a tiebreaking leadoff shot in the eighth inning for the San Diego Padres, who blew a 4-0 lead, then beat the New York Mets 5-4 on Wednesday night. Boone reached the seats in left-center field with his game-winning homer on a 3-2 pitch from Mahomes. Boone had been 0-for-6 against the reliever, with all of the at-bats coming last year when Boone played for the NL East rival Atlanta Braves. "We played the Met a lot of games last year, down through the playoffs," Boone said. "I had some tough series against them. They pitched me very well, and Pat has pitched me very well. So it's nice to kind of get one back." The two players have the same financial adviser and speak often. "He told me he was going to get me, and when he got me, he was going to get me good," Mahomes said. "I guess he stood true to his word." Mahomes (1-1) suffered his first loss since June 8, 1996, when he was with Minnesota. Mahomes had won 12 straight games, the longest streak among active pitchers. Mahomes threw a fastball right down the middle of the plate. "I've always thrown him fastballs and I always get him out," Mahomes said. Boone said he certainly wasn't thinking home run in that situation. "For me that doesn't work too well. It seems like if I ever try to, I don't." The Padres took two of three from the Mets and have won six of 10 games since an eight-game losing streak. Boone, who has seven homers this year, also connected twice on May 11 at Cincinnati, one of them an inside-the-park homer. He has nine two-homer games in his career. Donne Wall (1-2) pitched one inning for the win, and Trevor Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save in 10 opportunities. Hoffman appeared in all three games in the series, saving Monday night's 1-0 win after getting out of a bases-loaded jam, then losing Tuesday's game 5-3 after allowing Mike Piazza's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 10th inning. Ryan Klesko and Boone hit consecutive homers to highlight the four-run second inning against Bobby J. Jones, who allowed four straight hits to open the inning. Phil Nevin hit a leadoff single ahead of Klesko's homer into the right field seats, his ninth. Boone followed with a shot deep into the left-field seats. Carlos Hernandez singled and eventually scored on a double by Ruben Rivera, who batted in the leadoff spot for the second time in his career. The Mets scored two runs in the fourth, then closed to 4-3 in the sixth when Brian Meadows issued a two-out, bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Matt Franco. Carlos Almanzar came on and got pinch-hitter Kurt Abbott to force Franco at second and end the threat. But with two outs in the seventh, Almanzar allowed Edgardo Alfonzo's solo homer to left to tie the game at 4. It was the eighth homer for Alfonzo, who extended his hitting streak to eight. The Mets opened the fourth with three straight hits. Alfonzo and Mike Piazza singled and Robin Ventura hit an RBI double. After Meadows made a nice play on Todd Zeile's comebacker to hold Piazza at third, he scored on Benny Agbayani's groundout. Meadows could have gotten out of the sixth without allowing a run if he held onto shortstop Damian Jackson's throw on what could have been an inning-ending double play. Meadows, charged with an error on the play, then allowed Zeile's single and walked Agbayani to load the bases. He walked Franco on four pitches. Tony Gwynn doubled leading off the fifth, then was removed for a pinch runner because of his troublesome left knee. It was his 3,083rd career hit. Meadows allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out three and walked three, and got his second straight no-decision. Jones gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings, struck out two and walked two. Game notesAfter the game, the Padres said they will recall RHP Brian Boehringer from his rehab assignment and reinstate him from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, which is a day off. To make room, they'll option RHP Will Cunnane to Triple-A Las Vegas. ... Rivera extended his hitting streak to a career-high seven games. He batted leadoff in place of Eric Owens, who got his first day off since April 8. Owens had made 40 straight starts and had hit leadoff for the last 13 games. ... INF Jed Hansen, who spent parts of three seasons in the majors with Kansas City, signed a minor league contract with the Mets. He'll spend a week at extended spring training in Port St. Lucie and then play for Triple-A Norfolk. He was released from the Padres' organization on May 15. ... Gwynn's double was his 527th, moving him out of a tie with Dave Parker and into sole possession of 26th on the career list. ...
