No cooling off Edgar in M's victory

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SEATTLE (AP) -- The Mariners finally have their No. 1 pitcher back.

Jamie Moyer returned from a seven-week stint on the disabled list and pitched five innings for the win as Seattle beat the San Diego Padres 7-4 Friday night.

"I feel like I'm 100 percent," Moyer said. "If I wasn't 100 percent, I don't think I would have gone out there."

Edgar Martinez, who hit .441 with 10 homers, 32 RBI and 24 runs scored in May, picked up where he left off in the new month by going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer.

Martinez got to stay in the lineup because the designated hitter is used in interleague games at AL ballparks.

Moyer (3-1), sidelined because of a strained muscle in the back of his left shoulder, was activated before the game. He gave up Tony Gwynn's single and Phil Nevin's 14th home run in the first inning.

"I thought I threw the ball decently," Moyer said. "For the most part, when I wanted to make pitches, I made pitches."

Moyer limited the Padres to two hits in the next four innings before Brett Tomko relieved.

"For a guy who was out as long as he was, that was a good performance," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. "He gave us five good innings."

Moyer, pitching for the first time since April 14, struck out three and walked one.

"Honestly, I didn't have any expectations tonight," Moyer said. "If you put expectations on an evening, you could be in for a big letdown. I went out there and let whatever was going to have happen happen."

Ed Sprague, replacing Ryan Klesko at first base, committed a two-run throwing error in the second that tied the score.

After John Olerud led off the second with a double, Matt Clement (5-4) walked Jay Buhner. David Bell bunted and Sprague threw wildly over second baseman Bret Boone, allowing both runners to score.

Klesko did not start because of a slightly stiff back. He pinch hit in the ninth and struck out.

The Mariners went ahead with two runs in the third. With one out, Martinez singled and Clement followed with walks to Olerud and Buhner that loaded the bases. Bell hit an RBI single and Dan Wilson had a sacrifice fly.

After Alex Rodriguez drew a walk from Matt Whiteside in the seventh, Martinez followed with his 16th home run of the season. The Mariners got another run in the inning when Mark McLemore drew a bases-loaded walk from Carlos Almanzar.

The Padres scored twice in the eighth on Nevin's RBI single and a wild pitch. Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth for his eighth save in nine chances.

Clement, who lost for the fourth time in five decisions, threw three wild pitches. With 12, he tied Cincinnati's Scott Williamson for the most in the majors.

"Matt had a lot of energy, working so much harder than the seasoned veteran," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said, comparing his 25-year-old starter to Moyer. "It shows that you can power your way through the lineup or finesse your way through it like Moyer did."
