Scouting Report

1999 Season
Lefthander Matt Whisenant was signed by the Padres in August after the Royals released him. He worked as a lefty specialist and middle reliever for San Diego, with mixed results. Though he was tough to hit, he continued to display control problems.

Pitching, Defense & Hitting
The Padres took a chance on Whisenant because he's a rare lefty with a power arm. He has a low-90s heater and a sharp slider, but his command always has been his undoing. Though he's often wide of the plate, he rarely leaves pitches up and can be very difficult to take deep. Lefties have a tough time against him, but righthanders can take him apart. He shuts down the running game, having allowed just five stolen bases in his three major league seasons. He's a good athlete and a competent fielder, but he's completely unproven at the plate.

2000 Outlook
If Whisenant manages to stick with San Diego, he'll have to start in middle relief and work his way up. His presence in the majors is due more to his stuff than his record.
