GAME LOG
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- All Kevin Jordan did was follow his
manager's orders.
| | Philadelphia's Kevin Jordan is congratulated by teammates after knocking in the winning run Sunday. |
Jordan's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the 12th gave the
Philadelphia Phillies a 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox as the
Phillies recorded their first three-game sweep of the season.
As the Phillies came to bat in the 12th, manager Terry Francona
told Jordan, "if you get up, you're going to win the game."
"I don't remember a manager ever telling me that before,"
Jordan said. "I kind of put it out of my mind though. I just
wanted to concentrate up there."
Ron Gant led off the 12th with a single against Rheal Cormier
(2-1) and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Mike
Lieberthal was walked intentionally. Pat Burrell then struck out
and Jordan drove a 1-1 pitch off over the head of center-fielder
Carl Everett to score the winning run.
"I thought at first he (Everett) might make a play," Jordan
said. "I played with him in the minors and I know he is a real
good fielder."
Francona was pleased with the three-game sweep but emphasized it
doesn't guarantee anything.
"We played a real good series, but now we have to play good
against Tampa Bay or this won't mean much," Francona said.
The Red Sox, whose five-game losing streak is their longest of
the season, broke out to a 5-0 lead against Curt Schilling in the
third inning. But Boston was held to three hits and no runs in the
final nine innings by Schilling and six relievers.
"It's 162 game schedule," Boston manager Jimy Williams said.
"We just have to keep going. It's a long season."
Schilling didn't allow a hit after Everett's three-run homer
capped a five-run third inning. Schilling allowed five hits in 7
1/3 innings, struck out six and walked three.
"In my last two outings, there has been one inning that has
hurt me," Schilling said. "Both mentally and physically I felt
real good. It's a lot less frustrating when you win the game."
Steve Shrenk (2-1) got the final out of the 12th for the win.
Jeff Fassero, who is off to his best start since 1995 when he
was 7-1 with Montreal, allowed four runs and eight hits in eight
innings, but was denied his seventh win in eight decisions.
"We've just got to get a win somewhere," Fassero said. "We're
struggling right now and we got to start executing a little better.
We just have to snap out of it as quick as we can."
After Everett's home run, the Red Sox didn't get another hit
until Nomar Garciaparra hit a pinch-hit infield single with two
outs in the 10th.
"They made good pitches when they had to, especially after the
third inning," Williams said. We just have to keep going."
