RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Winning pitcher Esteban Yan hit a home run on the first pitch he saw as a major league batter, highlighting the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' 15-5 win over the New York Mets on Sunday.

Fred McGriff got his 2,000th career hit and Bubba Trammell had a three-run, pinch-hit homer as Tampa Bay scored five unearned runs in the eighth inning. Gerald Williams had three doubles and four RBIs.

Rookie Felix Martinez hit his first major league homer with two outs in the Tampa Bay second after Bobby J. Jones (1-2) walked John Flaherty.

Yan (3-3), batting because there's no DH in interleague games at NL parks, hit the next pitch into the left-field bullpen for a 3-0 lead.

The Mets came back in their half of the second when Mike Piazza walked and scored on Jay Payton's fourth home run. New York tied it in the third when Kurt Abbott was hit by a pitch and scored on Piazza's double off the glove of left fielder Greg Vaughn.

Joe McEwing opened the Mets fifth with a triple and scored on Piazza's sacrifice fly for a 4-3 lead, but the Devil Rays came right back, batting around and scoring five runs in the sixth on just three hits and three walks.

Williams' two-run double capped the big inning as the Devil Rays rallied for the victory. Vaughn opened with an infield single, McGriff walked and Flaherty hit an RBI single that tied it at 4.

Miguel Cairo walked, loading the bases and then reliever Pat Mahomes walked Martinez, forcing in the go-ahead run. Pinch-hitter Jose Guillen bounced out, scoring Flaherty, and Williams doubled for two more runs.

In the eighth, Williams delivered a sacrifice fly and Russ Johnson had an RBI single before Trammell's homer as Tampa added five more runs against reliever Rich Rodriguez following an error by Abbott at shortstop.

Game notes
The scoreboard identified Tampa Bay rookie Steve Cox as the active leader in grand slams with 14. That distinction belongs to Robin Ventura of the Mets. The oversight was corrected in Ventura's first at-bat. ... The Mets have at least one home run in 25 of the last 31 games and 14 homers in the last eight games. ... McGriff hit his 400th career home run Friday night at Shea Stadium.
