CHICAGO (AP) -- Jeff Reed picked the perfect time to break out of his slump.

Reed, 0-for-14 over his last five-plus games, hit a two-run, two-out double in a three-run 10th inning Monday night as the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.

"I was just glad I got a hit, No. 1," Reed said. "And that we won the game. We'll take it any way we can get it."

Reed hit a hanging slider off Matt Mantei (1-1) deep into the corner in right, and Andy Fox, who had entered in the ninth in a double-switch, couldn't get to it in time. Sammy Sosa scored, and he stayed at home waving wildly as pinch-runner Eric Young rounded third.

Young scored -- all the way from first -- and the Cubs poured out of their dugout.

"It was pretty bleak for awhile," Cubs manager Don Baylor said. "Our offense was shut down and they gave us one more time. Against their closer, it's a big win for us."

And yet another bad road loss for Arizona. The Diamondbacks have played seven straight one-run games on the road, and lost all but one.

"We had a lot of games like that last year," Arizona manager Buck Showalter said. "When you don't win, it tears your heart out. But you can't wallow in it."

Arizona took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th thanks to an error by Sosa. With two outs, Tony Womack hit a fly to the gap between center and right. Sosa and center fielder Damon Buford both went after the ball and their gloves touched. The ball dropped to the ground with neither making the catch, and Womack reached second.

"We both called it at the same time and couldn't hear it," Buford said. "Luckily, we can look back and say it's not a big deal. We won the game and we can go home and sleep tonight."

Jay Bell hit an RBI double off Rick Aguilera. Felix Heredia (2-1) relieved, and Luis Gonzalez drove in another run for the 3-1 lead. Heredia finally got the last out of the inning when Matt Williams flied out to center.

"That last inning, we make one mistake and they capitalize on it and score a couple of runs," Reed said. "It looked kind of bleak, but the guys kept battling."

Battle they did. Mark Grace doubled with one out, and Mantei threw a wild pitch on ball four to Sosa, putting runners at the corners. Willie Greene hit an RBI single and was replaced on base by Young.

Henry Rodriguez struck out, and then Reed sent a 2-2 pitch rocketing past Fox and into the corner for the game-winner.

"I tried to pin it so it didn't roll all the way to the wall," Fox said. "I think it bounced over me. It was the right place in this ballpark to hide it."

With the wind gusting in at 18 mph, it was a pitcher's battle until the 10th. Mike Morgan, starting in place of a resting Randy Johnson, gave up one run and five hits in 4 2/3 innings. Ismael Valdes, who missed his previous start with a tight hamstring, gave up just one run and five hits in eight innings.

Gonzalez's solo homer with two outs in the fourth tied the game at 1. Chad Meyers had scored on Mark Grace's sacrifice fly in the third for a 1-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks had a chance to win it in the ninth, when Tim Worrell loaded the bases by walking Greg Colbrunn with two outs. But Turner Ward grounded out to second.

"We've got better players than what we're playing, but we just haven't put it together," Reed said. "We need to turn it around, and we can do it."

The Diamondbacks recalled INF Danny Klassen from Triple-A Tucson and sent RHP Nelson Figueroa back to Tucson. ... Cubs 3B Shane Andrews was scheduled for back surgery Wednesday. ... With a crowd of 32,197, the Cubs surpassed the one million mark in attendance at Wrigley Field this season. At this pace, the Cubs should reach the 100-million mark for all-time attendance before the All-Star break.
