Scouting Report

2000 Season
The Cubs brought in Willie Greene to compete for their third-base job last spring. A hand injury delayed the start of his season, enabling Shane Andrews to fill the opening. Greene returned on April 26 and hit well for a few weeks, becoming the regular third baseman against righthanded pitchers after Andrews went down with an injury. In Andrews' absence, Greene's bat completely wilted, and the Cubs played him until Andrews returned.

Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Greene's lefthanded power has intrigued many teams, but he's always been undone by his two fatal weaknesses: an inability to hit either offspeed pitches or southpaws. He hit .244 in limited time against lefthanders last year, but owns a career slugging percentage of just .300 against them. He's an average third baseman, with good hands and a strong arm but below-average range. His speed on the bases is unimpressive.

2001 Outlook
The acquisition of Bill Mueller means Greene probably won't be back with the Cubs this year. A lefthanded power hitting third baseman should interest someone, however. Greene may not thrive unless he finds a role that won't overexpose his narrow offensive talents.
