GAME LOG
MONTREAL (AP) -- If only the Montreal Expos could play all of their games at home. The Expos are among the weakest teams in the National League on the road with a 12-20 record. But they are 23-11 at Olympic Stadium following a 2-1 come-from-behind victory Monday night over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"I think we play well everywhere," said Pavano (8-3), who allowed one run on five hits. "It's just a couple of timely hits that make the difference, but I think this team has been awesome." Pavano lowered his ERA to 3.07, giving up only a leadoff homer to John Vander Wal in the seventh as the Expos began a 12-game homestand after a 3-6 road trip. Montreal rallied in the eighth when Chris Widger drew a one-out walk. One out later, pinch-runner Terry Jones stole second and scored on a double by Peter Bergeron off reliever Rich Loiselle (0-2). Guerrero followed with his decisive single. "We needed to get that win," Widger said. "It would have been a shame to lose the way Carl pitched. "He wants to finish every game he starts. He lost it a little in the seventh, then came back the next inning and was throwing harder than he did in the first." Steve Kline pitched the ninth for his seventh save. Jose Silva threw six shutout innings for the Pirates in his first start since 1999. He allowed just four hits and struck out six. The Expos were the last team Silva beat as a starter on May 15, 1999. He also defeated them twice this season in consecutive relief appearances. "He didn't walk a batter and struck out six," said Pirates manager Gene Lamont, who has used nine starters this year. "He was impressive and I'll be anxious to see him the next time." The Pirates have lost five of six, and are 10 games below .500 for the first time this season.
