GAME LOG
PHOENIX (AP) -- With Todd Stottlemyre out for at least two months and Omar Daal struggling, the Arizona Diamondbacks need someone to depend on as a starter besides Randy Johnson. Brian Anderson is filling that role quite nicely. Anderson, the No. 5 starter when the season began, had his second strong outing in a row and Jose Lima set a Houston club record with his 12th consecutive loss as the Diamondbacks beat the Astros 6-2 Wednesday night. Anderson said he feels his role is no more important than it's been since the start of the season. "Maybe the sense of urgency is a little more in-your-face, a little bit brought to the forefront, but I look to go out every game, no matter where I'm slotted, and try to do a good job for the team," he said. Anderson, relies on his control, and he was hitting the spots Wednesday night. "Anderson was all over the corners," Houston manager Larry Dierker said. "He changes speeds. He holds runners. He picks off runners, and he's a good athlete. He pitched exactly the way the scouting report said, and he was good. It was not really surprising." Steve Finley drove in two runs with his 21st homer and a double as the Diamondbacks improved to 6-3 with five games left in a 14-game homestand. Anderson (8-2) ran his shutout string to 15 innings before giving up a run in the eighth. He allowed six hits in 7 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked one. "We got some sobering news today about Todd, so it was nice for B.A. to go out there and give us a lift and hold them down until we could get some runs on the board," Arizona manager Buck Showalter said. "He was outstanding." Anderson had allowed two hits in eight shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over Colorado in his last outing Friday. This time, he benefitted from some strong defense, including a diving catch by Travis Lee in right field and consecutive sliding catches by Steve Finley in center. Byung-Hyun Kim got the final two outs for his 12th save in 14 opportunities. Kim has retired 12 straight batters, 10 by strikeout. Lima (1-12) blanked the Diamondbacks through three innings before giving up Finley's 414-foot homer to right-center field with two outs in the fourth. It was Finley's first home run in 20 games, his longest drought of the season. "I haven't been swinging the bat too well, but he got a pitch a little out over the place and I put a swing on it," Finley said. "I wasn't trying to hit a home run. It was a line drive that went out." Lima, 21-10 last season as the Astros won their third straight Central Division title, pitched six-plus innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits. He struck out four and walked one. "Losing is not fun. I have so much pain inside of me," Lima said. "I wish I could show my emotions outside. I'm really hurting." Arizona added two more in the sixth. Luis Gonzalez singled with one out, then scored on Finley's double to deep center. Finley advanced to third on the throw home, then scored on Alex Cabrera's sacrifice fly to right field. The Diamondbacks broke it open with three more in the seventh. Damian Miller led off with a single. Danny Klassen doubled to center, and Miller scored when Richard Hidalgo bobbled the ball. Joe Slusarski relieved Lima and gave up RBI singles to Tony Womack and Jay Bell to make it 6-0. The Astros scored in the eighth when Chris Truby singled with one out before Julio Lugo drove him home with a two-out double. Tony Eusebio added an RBI single in the ninth. Game notesThe Diamondbacks announced that Stottlemyre will be out for two months, instead of the previously thought three weeks, with tendinitis in his right elbow. ... Arizona first baseman Erubiel Durazo was out of the lineup for the second game in a row with soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, and the Diamondbacks were considering placing him on the 15-day DL. ... Cabrera, who homered and tripled in his first two times at bat in the majors, is 4-for-7 with three RBIs in his three games for Arizona. ... Craig Biggio was called safe at first in the sixth inning when third base umpire Dan Iassogna ruled the shortstop Womack hadn't caught a line drive at his shoelaces. Mark Hirschbeck, the crew chief and home plate umpire, overruled and called Biggio out. Replays showed Womack caught the ball. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Houston Clubhouse Arizona Clubhouse RECAPS Baltimore 8 Boston 7
