Williams back from aneurysm surgery

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- These Colorado Rockies don't need to hit a lot of homers, and they're proving they can win on the road.

Colorado beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 Sunday on Jeff Cirillo's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, an unearned run off Padres bullpen ace Trevor Hoffman.

Woody Williams
Woody Williams worked eight innings Sunday in his first start since having aneurysm surgery in May.
Padres right-hander Woody Williams pitched eight strong innings in his first start following surgery for an aneurysm, but the Rockies ended up with just their fourth win in San Diego in 18 games dating to June 22, 1997.

The Rockies are 2-1 so far on this 10-game trip. A year ago, they went 0-7 on a California trip.

"We didn't hammer anyone today," manager Buddy Bell said. "Fundamentally, we did some good things."

Cirillo's second sacrifice fly of the game scored Mike Lansing, who had reached with one out on second baseman Bret Boone's fielding error and third on Todd Helton's single.

Cirillo said the two key plays were Neifi Perez beating out an RBI infield single in the sixth inning and Lansing hustling to first in the 10th. Boone fielded Lansing's slow roller, but dropped it and didn't make a throw.

"He didn't hit the ball the way he wanted to, but he still hustled it out," Cirillo said. "He didn't create the error but he created the fact that Boone couldn't make a play. The sac fly was just the product of the fact that Lansing hustled down to first base."

Hoffman, who got his 21st save in Saturday night's 5-3 win over the Rockies, fell to 1-3

Williams didn't figure in the decision, but Boone did get him off the hook for a loss when he hit a leadoff homer off Stan Belinda in the eighth, tying the game at 2. It was Boone's 15th of the year, second in two games and sixth in 10 games. He has 19 RBI in 11 games.

Williams allowed two runs and eight hits, struck out five and walked one. He hadn't pitched since going 8 1/3 innings in a loss to Florida on May 1. He felt numbness in his fingers in that start, like he had in several previous starts, and doctors discovered the aneurysm near his right armpit the next day. He had surgery on May 4.

"There wasn't a whole lot of anticipation," Williams said. "Today just felt calm."

That is, until Williams walked in from the bullpen just before game time and received a nice ovation from the crowd.

"It was incredible," Williams said. "It actually made me struggle a little bit in the first inning. After that, I still made mistakes but I got away with them. I was able to spot my fastball when I needed to."

Said manager Bruce Bochy: "I couldn't be prouder of Woody. It was a special scene out there on the mound. It was huge. He gave us eight innings. He's a leader on the staff. People can learn from him. He's all about winning."

Mike De Jean (3-1) pitched the ninth inning and Jose Jimenez worked the 10th for his 14th save in 16 chances.

Williams, one of San Diego's better-hitting pitchers, went 2-for-3 with an RBI double that tied the game at 1 in the fourth.

Colorado went ahead 2-1 in the sixth. Cirillo and Larry Walker hit consecutive one-out singles. Cirillo tried to score on Jeffrey Hammonds' grounder but third baseman Phil Nevin threw him out at home. Perez then beat out a grounder to shortstop to score Walker.

With the Padres trailing 1-0 and two outs in the fourth, Williams hit a full-count pitch from Kevin Jarvis past diving Cirillo at third for a double, with Ruben Rivera scoring from first. Williams also singled in second.

Colorado scored in the first on Cirillo's sacrifice fly, which gave him at least one RBI in eight straight games, tying the club record set by Ellis Burks in 1996.

Leadoff hitter Brian Hunter reached on an infield single, took third on Todd Helton's single and scored on Cirillo's fly ball. Left fielder Al Martin made a nice diving catch on the play.

Jarvis allowed one run and six hits in six innings, struck out five and walked three.
