Mariners' Sele baffles former teammates

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Aaron Sele has no regrets about his decision to leave the Texas Rangers and sign with the Seattle Mariners.

The right-hander pitched seven strong innings and was the beneficiary of a seven-run seventh inning as the Mariners beat the Rangers 11-4 Sunday night.

Sele (10-3) allowed two runs and six hits to improve to 8-1 in his last 10 starts. He struck out five and didn't issue a walk.

Things have been looking up for M's pitcher Aaron Sele, who is 8-1 in his last 10 starts and 10-3 overall.

"In my opinion, he's very deserving to be on the All-Star team," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. "I thought his fastball was really good and his curve had good bite to it."

Sele beat his former teammates for the first time this season. He had a no-decision on May 10 against the Rangers in a game the Mariners eventually lost at The Ballpark in Arlington, 7-6.

"There are still a lot of quality guys over there," said Sele, who has pitched at least seven innings eight times this season. "It's always good to come back. They still have a tough lineup. I was just trying to keep it close. When the team plays well, you know you're going to get some runs and that's what happened."

Edgar Martinez hit a two-run homer and Mike Cameron added a two-run single to highlight the seventh-inning burst.

Trailing 2-1, the Mariners loaded the bases with none out against Matt Perisho (2-2) on John Olerud's double, a walk to Jay Buhner and David Bell's single.

Pinch-hitter Stan Javier's grounder off reliever Tim Crabtree nearly resulted in a double play, but Javier barely beat shortstop Scott Sheldon's relay to first as Olerud scored the tying run.

Mark McLemore grounded to third, but rookie Mike Lamb threw the ball wildly to second for an error, allowing Buhner to score the go-ahead run. McLemore was credited with an RBI on the play.

Cameron's two-run single, Alex Rodriguez's RBI single and Martinez's two-run blast, all against Crabtree, stretched Seattle's lead to 8-2. Five of the seven runs in the inning were unearned due to Lamb's error.

"We got a break and put some runs on the board," Piniella said. "We came right back after they took the lead. We put up one of our biggest innings of the year."

Buhner's 15th homer, a three-run shot in the ninth off rookie Doug Davis, capped the scoring.

Seattle took two of three from Texas and has won nine straight series.

"This was an important series," Martinez said. "The first one was a tough one to lose so it was nice to come back. Good teams rebound and that's what we did."

For the Rangers, Lamb's defensive problems continue. He had two throwing errors, leading to six unearned runs, and has 14 errors in 60 games this season.

"The inconsistency of our young players is part of what's hurting us," manager Johnny Oates said of the Rangers' tumble in the AL West cellar during a 7-16 slide since June 5. "With young players, it's a different learning curve... To be a good, consistent ballclub, you have to play at least good defense and we are not playing that."

Seattle got the game's first run in the fourth on Buhner's sacrifice fly.

Texas took a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Rusty Greer reached on a one-out infield single and was awarded second when McLemore's throw bounced into the Rangers dugout for an error.

Greer scored on Ivan Rodriguez's two-out triple, and David Segui followed with an RBI single.

In the eighth, Rodriguez's sacrifice fly and Dave Martinez's RBI single cut it to 8-4.
