GAME LOG
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Nomar Garciaparra's quest to raise his batting average back to .400 was stalled for a day after a persistent rain washed out Wednesday night's game between the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles. The game will be made up Thursday as part of a day-night doubleheader. The opener will start at 1:35 p.m. and the nightcap is scheduled to get under way at 7:35. Garciaparra went 1-for-3 against Montreal on Tuesday and finished the game with a .399 batting average. The last player to have a .400 average this late in the season was John Olerud, who was at .402 on Aug. 2, 1993. Garciaparra is hitting .418 in 44 games since returning from the disabled list May 27. He's hitting .412 in July. His pursuit of .400 has taken some of the attention away from teammate Carl Everett, who is still awaiting word on a possible suspension stemming from his confrontation with an umpire Saturday. The Red Sox altered their rotation for the doubleheader. Pete Schourek, who was scheduled to pitch Wednesday, will start the second game Thursday. Ramon Martinez will start the opener. Baltimore will start with Sidney Ponson in the opener and Scott Erickson in the nightcap. Shortly before the rainout became official, Orioles manager Mike Hargrove spoke about how often Ponson has been scheduled to pitch on rainy days. "Sidney's pitching, so you know it's going to rain," Hargrove said. "If Sidney pitches in the Gobi desert, he probably faces a 3-inch gullywasher." Ponson had an April start pushed back by rain and pitched three scoreless innings against Texas on June 15 before being pulled after a rain delay of more than two hours. His last start, Friday against Atlanta, came after the game was held up a half-hour by rain. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Boston Clubhouse Baltimore Clubhouse RECAPS Kansas City 10 Cleveland 5
