MINNEAPOLIS -- No one is quite sure why Minnesota Twins
pitcher Joe Mays turns into an star every time he faces the Chicago
White Sox.
Mays allowed five hits in eight innings and Chad Allen had three
hits and three RBI on Thursday as the Minnesota Twins stopped
Chicago's five-game winning streak, 5-1.
Mays (5-11) is 4-0 against the White Sox in his two-year career,
7-22 against all other teams. He used four pitches effectively,
worked ahead of hitters and kept the ball down, striking out six in
his second victory over Chicago this season. He allowed his only run on
Jose Valentin's homer in the eighth.

No sign of Kelly after weeklong
absence to care for his father

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ron Gardenhire is starting to enjoy managing
the Twins, although Tom Kelly's job certainly isn't in
jeopardy.
Gardenhire has been managing the Twins since the All-Star break
while Kelly has been in Fort Myers, Fla., with his ailing father.
Joe Kelly is recovering from heart bypass surgery and Gardenhire
said he will continue to run the team for as long as necessary.
"There's no hurry. The big thing is making sure that
everything's OK down there," Gardenhire said.
Gardenhire is 4-4 as manager, although those wins and losses
will count toward Kelly's season and career totals, according to
the Elias Sports Bureau.
Tom Kelly Jr., the manager's son, told Gardenhire that Joe Kelly
showed signs of improvement Thursday.
"We haven't heard that in a couple of days," Gardenhire said.
"There are all the things that you worry about, things like
infections and then getting off the ventilator and all the machines
so you can go on your own."
Gardenhire last managed in 1990 at Double-A Orlando. He has been
a Twins coach since 1991, and said at least one thing has changed
about managing since he was last in charge.
"It's a lot of writing, I know that," he said. "The lineup
cards, writing the lineup on the wall. I don't remember doing this
much writing in the minor leagues."

"Mays was simply outstanding against a very good lineup," said
Twins coach Ron Gardenhire, who is managing the team while Tom
Kelly is with his sick father.
Mays, who won for just the second time in his last seven starts,
said maybe the White Sox just got unlucky.
"It's just one of those thing where they always seem to catch
me when I've got things figured out right," he said.
Paul Konerko had two hits for Chicago, which lost for just the
12th time in 41 games.
"It's like every time we face him, we're due for a loss,"
Konerko said. "For some reason, we haven't done it against him."
David Ortiz was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored for the
Twins, giving him hits in eight consecutive plate appearances, one
short of the team record shared by Todd Walker (1998), Mickey
Hatcher (1985) and Tony Oliva (1967).
Ortiz walked in the eighth and has reached base nine consecutive times, two short of the team record shared by Walker (1998), Chuck
Knoblauch (1996) and Rod Carew (1967).
"David Ortiz is doing fine," Gardenhire said. "He's getting
his hits. Some of them aren't pretty, but he's having a good
time."
Ortiz, who is hitting .447 (13-for-38) in his last 13 games, had
a broken-bat single and bloop single Thursday to keep his streak
alive.

"I gained some confidence," he said. "When you get some
playing time, that's when you get your timing.
White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said he was impressed with Ortiz
during the two-game series against the Twins.
"He got 'em in all kinds of ways this series," Manuel said.
"Bloops, broken bats, you name it."
Jim Parque (9-3), who had won his previous six decisions, lost
for the first time in 10 starts since May 17, allowing three runs
and 10 hits in seven innings.
Minnesota went ahead in the first on a two-out, run-scoring single by
Jacques Jones, and Allen doubled home a run in the second. Cristian
Guzman homered in the seventh and Allen added a two-run single off
Sean Lowe in the eighth.
It was Guzman's seventh homer and first since June 10 against
the Brewers.
Mays worked out of a jam in the third after a leadoff walk to
Frank Thomas. Konerko lined a single and on Chris Singleton's fly
out to right, was caught in a rundown between first and third
before being tagged out by first baseman Ron Coomer. Carlos Lee
followed with a weak grounder to Mays.
Game notes --
The Twins turned two double plays, giving them eight in
three games. They had five Tuesday against St. Louis and one
Wednesday against the White Sox. ... Minnesota first-base coach
Jerry White was back in the coaching box after missing the last two
innings of the game Wednesday night because he was hit in the head
with Matt Lawton's batting helmet. Lawton threw the helmet to the
dirt in frustration after being called out on a close play at first
and it bounced into White's head.
