OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Matt Stairs said everyone in the Oakland
Athletics dugout thought the same thing: Aaron Sele was good enough
to get a no-hitter.

Sele was working on one until the seventh inning Thursday, when
Stairs singled off the Seattle starter and the A's went on to beat
the Mariners 5-4. Stairs added a two-run homer in the eighth
inning.
"It was a relief," Stairs said of his soft liner to right. "I
think anyone in their right mind -- going into the seventh inning
without a hit -- thinks, `Hey, maybe this could be the night we get
a no-hitter thrown against us.' "
Sele (11-5) led 1-0 when he walked Ben Grieve with one out in
the seventh. Stairs followed with Oakland's first hit, which fell
in front of right fielder Jay Buhner.
Jeremy Giambi was hit two pitches later and Miguel Tejada
followed with a double down the right-field line for a 2-1 lead.
Sele intentionally walked Eric Chavez to reload the bases, Jose
Paniagua relieved and Ramon Hernandez flied out. Terrence Long
singled, scoring Giambi for a 3-1 lead, but Tejada was thrown out
at the plate by Buhner.
Oakland manager Art Howe, angered over the call, argued with
plate umpire Chuck Meriwether and was ejected. Howe pulled his
hamstring as he came out of the dugout.
"He might be the first manager in history ever to go out to
argue a call and blow a hamstring," Stairs said.
Stairs' two-run homer in the eighth came off Jose Mesa.
Jason Isringhausen, who got his 21st save in 25 chances, got
three outs but allowed a two-run double to pinch-hitter Stan Javier
and an RBI groundout by John Mabry before retiring Rickey Henderson
on a game-ending flyout.
Sele, whose career low-hit complete game was a three-hitter at
Detroit on April 11, allowed three runs and two hits in 6 1/3
innings. He struck out four and walked four.
"I don't feel good about myself," Sele said. "I wasn't
throwing good pitches today, and I got hurt by my own mistakes. I
kept thinking out there: Something's going to happen."
Oakland's Gil Heredia (11-7) allowed one run and six hits in
seven innings.
"It's a funny game," he said. "We end up winning and the
other guy throws a two-hitter."
Henderson singled leading off the game, moving past Mel Ott for
34th on the career hits list at 2,877 hits. Henderson, baseball's
career steals leader, was caught attempting to steal second later
in the inning.
Carlos Guillen, who missed most of last season because of a
right knee injury and has been in the minors for part of this
year, homered in the third. It was his first home run since April 5, 1999, against
the Chicago White Sox.
Game notes
A's pitcher Omar Olivares, on the disabled list since June
17 with a strained right shoulder, was set to throw about 30
pitches Thursday to test his arm, A's manager Art Howe said. ....
The A's have not determined their starter for Saturday, but it
could be Barry Zito, the A's first-round draft pick last year. He
is playing at Triple-A Sacramento. "We have not made a decision,
but we are leaning in that direction," Howe said. ... Alex
Rodriguez, who is on the disabled list with a strain of his right
knee, ran Wednesday and was scheduled to run again on Thursday.
Mariners manager Lou Piniella said an announcement about his status
would be made Friday.
