Loaiza allows six runs in five innings

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

TORONTO (AP) -- Esteban Loaiza would like to forget about his Toronto debut.

Jose Mercedes threw seven sharp innings and the Baltimore Orioles won their third straight game, beating Loaiza and the Blue Jays 8-2 Saturday.

Loaiza (5-7) allowed six runs -- five earned -- in five innings. He was acquired from Texas on July 19 for two minor leaguers.

"I just got to get this out of my head and think about my next start," Loaiza said. "I know there are a lot of people watching me, but I've got to get the nerves out. I think I was just trying to be too perfect. I'll be more relaxed in my next outing."

Mercedes (5-4) pitched five scoreless innings before allowing a homer to Brad Fullmer in the sixth.

"That would be the only mistake I made because it was the only run," Mercedes said.

Mercedes allowed one run on seven hits while striking out two and walking one. The 29-year-old right-hander has won two straight decisions after allowing nine runs in his return to the starting rotation July 8.

"I didn't overthrow, and I stayed on top of my sinker," Mercedes said. "When you have a big lead it's a totally different game."

Fullmer hit his 18th homer for the Blue Jays, who tied a club record by homering in 21 straight home games -- two short of the AL record. Marty Cordova homered in the ninth off Orioles reliever Chuck McElroy.

B.J. Surhoff drove in two runs for the Orioles, who have won two straight against the Blue Jays after losing 14 in a row at SkyDome.

Albert Belle's double gave Baltimore a 1-0 lead in the first and Ivanon Coffie had an RBI grounder in the second.

The Orioles scored three runs in the third. With runners on second and third, Surhoff hit a grounder to first baseman Carlos Delgado, who made a wild throw home that allowed two runs to score. Charles Johnson added an RBI double.

Surhoff had an RBI single in the fifth. Brady Anderson's two-run single off Chris Carpenter in the eighth made it 8-1.

Carpenter, who was sent to the bullpen after Loaiza was acquired, gave up two runs on two three hits in three innings.

After the game, Toronto manager Jim Fregosi said Carpenter would likely return to the rotation.

"He's changed his mechanics. He's going over the top more," Fregosi said. "I thought he threw the ball well."
