Arroyo pitches Pittsburgh to victory

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- While the postseason is a longshot for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a couple of rookie pitchers are giving them hope for 2001.

Bronson Arroyo held Philadelphia to two singles in seven shutout innings for his first major league win as the Pirates edged the Phillies 2-1 on Saturday night.

His performance came one night after another rookie, Jimmy Anderson, held the Phillies to three hits over eight scoreless innings in a 9-2 win. The benefits of that game carried over to Saturday.

"I thought they would be a little aggressive at the plate because Jimmy shut them down," Arroyo said. "They didn't really get many hits last night. I started a lot of their right-handed hitters out with sliders on the outside of the plate, and they seemed to be chasing them and hitting a lot of groundballs."

Arroyo (1-3) walked three and struck out three in his sixth major league start. The right-hander is up from the minors and in the rotation because Francisco Cordova is on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.

"Bronson had real good control and that was the difference between tonight and his other starts," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said. "He kept the ball down, had a good cutter and a good changeup."

One of Arroyo's losses came against the Phillies during a three-game sweep by Philadelphia earlier in the month.

"He certainly wasn't the same pitcher we saw at our place," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "I don't think we're swinging the bats real well right now, but he also pitched very well."

Mike Benjamin, who had three RBI in Friday's 9-2 win, had a run-scoring triple in the seventh off Robert Person (5-3).

Emil Brown drew a one-out walk and stole second with two outs. Benjamin lined a ball past shortstop Desi Relaford to score Brown, and was able to reach third when the ball got under left fielder Ron Gant's glove and rolled to the wall.

Philadelphia's Ed Vosberg loaded the bases in the ninth on Warren Morris' single and two walks. Chris Brock relieved and walked Brown to force in a run and make it 2-0.

Jason Christiansen pitched a perfect eighth and Mike Williams got three outs for his 14th save in 16 chances, despite allowing Bobby Abreu's leadoff homer in the ninth.

"If we could have held it at one, Abreu's home run would have meant a heck of a lot more," Francona said.

Person came off the disabled list after missing 15 days with a shoulder strain. He allowed four hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

"If you had told me before the game this was what we'd get from him, I would have jumped for joy," Francona said. "You don't expect that. He was sharp. I was very pleased with him."

The Pirates have won four of five since ending a season-worst six-game losing streak. The Phillies have lost four of five.
