TORONTO (AP) -- Joey Hamilton did a lot better than he hoped.
Hamilton, making his first start since undergoing shoulder
surgery last September, allowed three hits in six scoreless innings
Saturday. His relief did not fare so well, though, and the Toronto
Blue Jays lost to the Minnesota Twins 5-1.

"I was a little surprised," Hamilton said. "I felt good. My
velocity was decent. I hit my spots and mixed up my pitches."
Hamilton struck out six and walked three in his first start
since Aug. 31, 1999. Pitching with a sore right shoulder for most
of last season, he went 7-8 with a 6.52 ERA.
"I've only felt right in the last three outings," said
Hamilton, who went 3-2 in six rehab starts at Triple-A Syracuse.
"The first four starts in Syracuse I had discomfort, and it still
hurt. The pitches weren't doing what they were supposed to be
doing. When I started at Syracuse I was throwing just 84, 85 mph."
Hamilton topped out at 91 mph against Minnesota.
"My velocity is not where it needs to be, but it has made me
concentrate more on hitting my spots and using all my pitches,"
Hamilton said.
Brad Radke allowed one run in seven innings as the Twins ended a
three-game losing streak. Radke, who allowed seven runs to Toronto
in his last start, pitched six scoreless innings after Dave
Martinez's RBI single in the first.
"It's always good to come back and beat the team that beat you
bad," Radke said.
Radke (9-13) gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out four.
Eddie Guardado got the last five outs for his eighth save.
The Twins, losers of four of their previous five, scored three
runs in the seventh off reliever Mark Guthrie (1-3). Cristian
Guzman had a two-run double, and Matt Lawton added a run-scoring
single.
The Twins added two runs in the ninth on Ron Coomer's RBI triple
and Corey Koskie's run-scoring single.
Hamilton struggled in the first inning, loading the bases on
Matt Lawton's double and consecutive walks to Coomer and David
Ortiz. He got out of the inning when Koskie popped out to short.
Hamilton, working quickly, threw 102 pitches -- 60 for strikes.
He struck out the side in the fourth.
Game notes
The Blue Jays acquired Hamilton from San Diego on Dec. 13,
1998. ... Radke has pitched at least six innings in 22 of 27
starts. ... Radke gave up seven runs on 10 hits in just 2 1/3
innings of a 13-3 loss to Toronto on Aug. 13.
