ST. LOUIS (AP) -- On a night when he didn't have his best stuff,
Pat Hentgen said he appreciated some clutch support by his teammates.
"I was lucky tonight," Hentgen said after pitching five
innings and getting the victory in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-3 win
over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.
Hentgen (12-9) allowed one run in the first inning after warming
up twice when the start of the game was delayed by rain for one
hour and 21 minutes.
"The rest of the guys could tell I was grinding and I was
battling," Hentgen said. "When you have an outing like that,
you're fortunate to come out with a win," he said.
The Cardinals scored three times in the first. Fernando Vina led
off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, Edgar
Renteria walked and both runners scored on a double by Shawon
Dunston.
Dunston, who was 5-for-8 lifetime against Omar Daal coming into
the game, scored on a single by Eric Davis to make it 3-1. Hentgen gave up one run and four hits and worked around five
walks. "I made 95 pitches in five innings and that was wearing me down," he said.
The Phillies have lost six straight, their longest skid since
they dropped six in a row in July 1998. The Cardinals have won
seven of their last nine.
"The season is not over," Phillies manager Terry Francona
said. "Tomorrow, we'll try our best best to do better. A lot of
people are having fun at our expense. And for that, I feel bad for
the players."
Three relievers finished up for the Cardinals. Mike Timlin gave
up a two-run homer to Doug Glanville in the ninth.
Daal (3-14) allowed six runs and nine hits in seven innings,
striking out nine. He is 1-4 since the Phillies acquired him in a
trade for Curt Schilling.
Daal said that except for the home run hit by Renteria, he
pitched a good game. "I hung one pitch and he got all of it. That's the way this
game goes," he said.
Renteria hit his 14th homer in the seventh after walks to
Placido Polanco and Vina. The Phillies scored in the first on a single by Bobby Abreu, a
walk to Mike Lieberthal and a two-out single by Travis Lee. The first two Phillies reached in the fourth and fifth, but
Hentgen retired the next three hitters in each inning.
Game notes
Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds, who has not homered
since Aug. 2 and is in a 2-for-24 slump, did not play. ... Vina was
2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. ... Scott Rolen
has 16 hits in his last 41 at-bats for the Phillies. ... The
sellout crowd of 47,163 was the 28th full house in 60 home games
for the Cardinals. The record of 33 for a season was set in 1988.
